Area API

People commonly define themselves by the places in which they live and work, ranging from a region, state or local neighborhood. The Onboard Area API returns boundary data for many levels of geography, including counties, places, neighborhoods and more. You can use these boundaries to give your users more context and to aggregate data to visualize on a map.

What's New?

We have added Maponics School Attendance Zone boundaries (Geography IDs SB and DB) to our Area API.

As previously communicated, our partnership with Maponics also has resulted in Onboard sunsetting its neighborhood and school attendance products. This sunset date was set for August 31, 2016. As of October 25, 2016, you will no longer see the geography types NH, SS or SD in results returned from our Area or other APIs available through the platform.

If you are still in the process of migrating to Maponics boundaries, we have some tools to help. Please check out our Maponics documentation folder for additional mapping documents and lookups.

What's new in 2.0

Notable changes to the API include new naming conventions used for specific boundary types. Names are related to the “type” field. The following table indicates the current naming convention and the new convention:

Current Name New Name Description
CBSA CB Core Based Statistical Area representing a major metro
Census Place* PL US Census Bureaue designated place (city)
County CO County or county equivalent
Census Place* CS County subdivision (town, hamlet or unincorporated place)
Neighborhood NH Neighborhood not defined by government authority (deprecated)
State ST U.S. State
Zip Code ZI ZCTA or Census ZIP Code Tabulation Area

*NOTE: Onboard has chosen to use either Census Place OR County Subdivision boundaries in certain areas where the geography type best fits the local understanding and designation of geographies.

We’ve also added several new area types added to the API.

New Type Description
ND Maponics defined neighborhood boundary.
RS Maponics defined residential boundary. These boundaries delineate neighborhoods with houses, condos and apartment complexes, and exclude those with commercial, industrial or public spaces
MT Maponics defined metro boundary. These boundaries include urban areas in which population concentration is greater than 50,000 and population density is greater than 1,000 people per square mile.
PZ Postal ZIP, representing an expanded set of ZIP Codes not documented by the US Census Bureau
SD School District
SS School Attendance zone representing the catchment area for a specific school and grade level
